Limits & supported formats

Input: 1 file · WebP · up to 20 MiB.

Images: up to 2,048 px per side and 400 animation frames.

Output: up to 2,048 px per side, 4,194,304 pixels per frame and 400 frames.

Detailed budgets: 40,000,000 decoded pixels, an estimated 192 MiB working allocation and 64 MiB per ZIP. These estimates help reject large jobs; they do not guarantee a browser process memory peak.

Make a WebP easier to share as a GIF

Convert animated WebP for a destination that accepts GIF. A static WebP becomes a single-frame GIF. Start with 256 colors for detail, then reduce the palette if file size matters more. Soft transparency becomes fully clear or fully opaque, so edges can change.

Choosing your settings

GIF timing uses 10 ms steps and a minimum 20 ms delay here. Color reduction and binary transparency can change the appearance; compare several frames, especially soft edges.

If the result needs another pass

Color-profile WebPs that are not supported are rejected. Try exporting a compatible WebP in an image editor, or keep the original when GIF loses too much detail.

Good to know

Does it keep animation?

Yes. Animated WebP contributes all frames. Millisecond timing is rounded to GIF’s 10 ms units with a 20 ms minimum.

What happens to partial transparency?

GIF supports fully transparent or opaque pixels. Alpha values are thresholded at 50%, which can change soft edges.
